DIY Manicure Tips, Techniques, and Trends

I love getting a mani/pedi! There’s something so lovely about having perfectly manicured nails to make you feel polished and put together. When I headed to LA for the Oscars, I knew I needed a gorgeous manicure to complement my gorgeous Rami Kadi gown, so I called Brittney Boyce! She’s the one responsible for this stunning glass French manicure (pictured above!). Britt does amazing work, so I asked to her for an insider's look at any upcoming nail trends, her tried-and-true designs, and tips for us while we’re all social distancing.

She put together this 10-minute tutorial for an at-home DIY manicure! Grab your favorite ORLY Breathable Nail Polish and check out Britt’s techniques for pampering our nails…until we can get back into the salons!

Keep reading for details about upcoming nail trends, Britt’s favorite looks, and how she chooses her designs!

1. How do you decide on a look? Do you take into account trends, personality, wardrobe, etc?

Looks are based on a mixture of my client’s personal style and what’s trending. It’s always good to meet in the middle for the right comfort zone.

2. I’m obsessed with the glass French mani you gave me for the Oscars. Where did you come up with that style? (Is it now one of the more popular requests from your clients?)

I came up with this look by wanting to keep the simple glass nail look while adding a small delicate accent. A clean gold outline was the perfect fit without taking away from the clean design. This is definitely an all-time favorite for me and my clients and has received a lot of attention after the Oscars. [This design has since been featured in allure, POPSUGAR, and NAILPRO!]

3. Where do you get your design inspiration?

Simple patterns and I like to modernize old trends.

4. What can you tell me about any upcoming spring trends?

Sheer nudes with pops of color are still my absolute favorite. You will also be seeing a lot of bronzes, terra-cottas, peaches, and purples for spring.

5. Current favorite polish colors:

ORLY First Kiss (all-time favorite sheer nude that compliments everyone’s skin tone).

6. Do you think a mani and pedi should match?

I don’t think a match is necessary but I do recommend a darker or bolder color on the toes with a more toned down complimentary color on the hands.

7. Is there a style you haven't seen in a while that you'd love to bring back?

As of right now, no. I am happy that the original French manicure is back on trend and is also being re-created in new, cool ways.
